Providence man found asleep behind the wheel on Route 146 arrested for child endangerment

NORTH SMITHFIELD – A Providence man who police say they found unresponsive in the driver’s seat of a vehicle stopped in the high speed lane of Route 146 with his 4-year-old daughter in the car is facing child endangerment charges.

Alfred Smith, age 30, was also charged with DUI, blood alcohol content unknown, and refusal to submit to a chemical test, third plus offense, following the incident on Monday, April 1.

According to police, officers were dispatched to the highway at the Lincoln line at around 9:36 p.m. for a report of a vehicle stopped in the high speed lane, with the operator passed out. Working with Lincoln police, North Smithfield officers reportedly found Smith unresponsive in the operator’s seat, with his 4-year-old daughter secured in a booster seat in the back of the vehicle.

“Lincoln advised that after making contact and administering aid, Smith became conscious and alert,” noted a release from NSPD’s Capt. Ellen Lamoureaux. 

Smith was summonsed and released, with a court date of April 14. He has additionally been charged civilly with stopping on traveled portion of a highway, driving with an expired license, operation of an unregistered motor vehicle and improper evidence of registration, with an assigned court date of May 2.

  1. Alfred, I can imagine how much your court dates, fines, and impound fees are stressing you out. Please focus on the fact that you are learning your lesson without someone having to die from your judgement errors. Take care of your business with the court, and move on as a better person.
