Woonsocket man arrested for pointing gun at passers by at N.S. motel

NORTH SMITHFIELD – A man who allegedly pointed a gun at a couple walking through the parking lot of Travelers Motor Lodge is now facing felony charges with North Smithfield police.

Raymond Unwin, 38, of Woonsocket was arrested and charged with felony assault by use of devices similar in appearance to firearms, disorderly conduct and obstructing a police officer following the incident on Friday, March 29.

Police were reportedly called to the Eddie Dowling Highway motel around 2 a.m. by a man who told officers that he was walking through the parking lot with his girlfriend when he was approached by another male who pointed a firearm at them. After a brief exchange, the man with the firearm walked away and entered one of the motel rooms, according to the victim.

Officers on the scene observed three men exiting the room and were able to identify Unwin as the suspect, according to a release on the incident from Capt. Ellen Lamoreaux. Police located and seized a Colt CO2 pistol.

Unwin was arraigned at Third District Court, and his bail was set at $10,000 with surety. He has a no contact order with the victim and his next court appearance is scheduled for Friday, July 12.
