Open House, Cedar Brook & Tree Lighting: Five things to know in North Smithfield this week

Quilt exhibit

The North Smithfield Art Committee has announced that there will be a “Holiday Refresh,” of a quilt exhibit at Town Hall at 83 Green St., with select pieces from the Blackstone Valley Piecemakers to remain on display through the month of December. Residents are invited to stop by Town Hall to view the exihibit.

Open House

The North Smithfield Heritage Association will hold a December Open House on Thursday, Dec. 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Forestdale School at 190 School St.  Visitors can learn from volunteers about this 19th-century, one-room schoolhouse, view local artifacts, and purchase historically themed gift items that include puzzles, Christmas ornaments, books, throws, maps, 2024 calendars and prints. All items highlight the town’s heritage. Visitors can also subscribe to the free NSHA monthly Newsletter or join the Association and current members can renew dues.

Cedar Brook

The NSHA will also host a Heritage Walk this week, with exploration of Todd’s Farm and the Cedar Brook Cart Path on Saturday, Dec. 9 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Participants will meet at the North Smithfield High School Tennis Courts on Grange Road.

Tree lighting

The North Smithfield Parks & Recreation Department will host the town’s annual tree-lighting ceremony on Sunday, Dec. 10 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the gazebo by Town Hall at 83 Green St. The event will featuring caroling, music, crafts, cookies, hot chocolate and a visit from Santa. The public is invited to attend the free family event.

Town meetings

The North Smithfield Town Council will hold a meeting at Town Hall at 83 Green St. on Monday, Dec. 4 starting with executive session at 6:45 p.m. The regular meeting is expected to start around 7:30 p.m. and will include a joint meeting with the Budget Committee. The agenda is here.

The Halliwell Review Committee will hold a meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 6 starting at 6:45 p.m. at Town Hall at 83 Green St. The agenda is here.

The North Smithfield School Committee will hold a joint meeting with the North Smithfield Town Council on Thursday, Dec. 7 in the cafeteria of North Smithfield Middle School at 1840 Providence Pike starting at 6:30 p.m. The agenda is here.
