Shoe drive
The North Smithfield Middle School National Junior Honor Society is collecting old sneakers to raise money and to keep sneakers out of the landfill.
According to GotSneakers? A Sneaker Recycling Organization, “Most people throw away their used sneakers every 125-200 days without ever thinking about recycling. Since sneakers are manufactured with materials that are not biodegradable, they remain in landfills or are incinerated, which leads to toxic chemicals in our air and soil,” the group notes.
Starting on Monday, Oct. 16 sneakers in any size and condition can be dropped off at a box in the main foyer of the school at 1850 Providence Pike. The fundraising drive will continue through Friday, Oct. 27.
