Explorers, final concert & Class of 2024 car wash: Five things to know in North Smithfield this week

Primary

A primary election will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 5 to narrow down the field of candidates for the 1st Congressional District seat previously held by Democrat David Ciccilline. Primary voters in North Smithfield can find their polling place here, with all locations open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., or can still cast an early vote at Town Hall at 83 Green St. until 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

Voters who are registered as Democrats will choose between: Walter Berbrick, Allen Waters, Spencer Dickinson, Aaron Regunberg, Lt. Gov. Sabina Matos, Woonsocket Rep. Stephen Casey, Gabe Amo, Providence City Councilman John Gonçalves, Stephanie Beauté, Pawtucket Sen. Sandra Cano, and Providence Sen. Ana Quezada. Don Carlson, who dropped out of the race on Aug. 27, also appears on the ballot.

On the Republican ballot, voters will choose between Gerry Leonard, the Rhode Island Republican Party’s endorsed candidate, and former Middletown Town Councilwoman Terri Flynn.

Explorers

The North Smithfield Police Department is now accepting applications for its Explorer Youth Program, with meetings to be held every other Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m. starting in mid-October. The program is open to those age 12-20 with good school attendance and passing grades, and covers topics that closely mirror actual police training including firearm safety, accident investigation, traffic stops and more.

Final concert

The final concert in North Smithfield Parks & Recreation Department’s Summer Concert series will take place this Thursday, Sept. 7 at the gazebo at Town Hall at 83 Green St. Catch a free show by Country Wild West along with food trucks at the season finale, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Car wash

The North Smithfield High School Class of 2024 will hold a car wash on Saturday, Sept. 9 at the high school at 412 Greenville Road from 10 a.m. to noon. The cost is $5 per vehicle, with all proceeds to benefit class activities.

Town meetings

The North Smithfield Recreation Committee will hold a meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 6 starting at 6 p.m. at Town Hall at 83 Green St. The agenda is here.

The North Smithfield Water Supply Review Committee will hold a meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 6 starting at 6:45 p.m. at Town Hall at 83 Green St. The agenda is here.

The North Smithfield Municipal Building Review Task Force will hold a meeting on Thursday, Sept. 7 starting at 5:30 p.m. at the police station at 575 Smithfield Road. The agenda is here.

The Halliwell Review Committee and the Multi-generational Advisory Committee will hold a joint meeting on Thursday, Sept. 7 starting at 7 p.m. at Town Hall at 83 Green St. The agenda is here.
