School day reduction

The Burrillville School District has announced that that school year will be reduced by three days this year for elementary school students, as town grade schools exceed the amount of instructional time required by the Rhode Island Department of Education. Student in grades K-5 will have the full day off on Thursdays, Nov. 9 and March 28 – originally scheduled as half days for parent/teacher conferences. The change does not affect the calendar year for middle school or high school students.

The first day of school is Wednesday, August 30 with kindergarten students to start on Thursday, August 31, and a complete district calendar can be found here.

Postponed Trust Days kickoff

An event celebrating the statewide start of Land Trust Days – originally scheduled for Friday, August 25 – has been rescheduled due to rain last week and will now be held on Friday, Sept. 1. The event, hosted by the Burrillville Land Trust from 9 to 11 a.m., will be held at the historic schoolhouse at 310 Eagle Peak Road. Tours of the historic schoolhouse and guided hikes to the nearby granite quarry will begin at 9 a.m., followed by a speakers program, then a second round of tours and a hike. The public is invited to attend.

The event kicks off with a parade at 11 a.m. at the Oakland Triangle, followed by a day of fun, with food, games, cash prizes, raffle prizes, vendors, beer and the annual Firefighters Muster Competition.

The public is invited to attend the event on the corner of Victory Highway and Oakland School Street, and cheer on local firefighters while they compete for $1,000 in prizes.
