Paving, soup & a vacation closing: Five things to know in North Smithfield this week

Paving

The town has announced that paving at the top course of Pound Hill Road and Doire Court will take place on Tuesday, July 11. Drivers are advised to plan accordingly.

Food pantry needs soup

The North Smithfield Food Pantry has announced that pickup dates in the month of July will be held on Saturdays, July 22 and 29 at 10 a.m. and Tuesdays, July 18 and 25 at 5:30 p.m.

The Food Pantry is for North Smithfield residents who must have a photo ID and a bill that confirms their address. Guests can attend the pantry all four times it is open per month at the Slatersville Congregational Church UCC on the Common.

For the month of July, the pantry is seeking donations of cereal, canned soup and canned beans.

Closing

Two town restaurants under the same ownership: The Village Haven and the Lucky Dog Tavern, have announced that they will close for vacation this week. The School Street businesses close today, Monday, July 10, and will not reopen until Wednesday, July 19.

Ongoing summer fun

As another thing to know this week, we offer a reminder of ongoing, in-town, warm weather fun.

Car Shows continue at the Beef Barn Restaurant at 200 Industrial Drive every Tuesday night from 4-8 p.m., and on Sundays, the restaurant hosts yoga on the back fields starting at 9 a.m.

Entertainment at Lindy’s Plastic Palace on School Street also continues this week with Nervous Breakdown on Friday, July 14; So Many Rhodes on Saturday, July 15; and an open mic on Sunday from 3-7 p.m. At The Island at 1600 Victory Highway, The White Shadows will play starting at 7 p.m. Friday night and on Saturday, Steve Walason will perform from 3-7 p.m., while the business also hosts a cornhole tournament.

The Parks & Recreation Department’s run/walk club continues to meet on Mondays,Wednesdays and Fridays from 6:45-7:15 a.m. at the North Smithfield High School track, and Slatersville Congregational Church offers a non-denominational Reflection on the Common every Wednesday evening from 6-6:30 p.m. through the end of August.

Town meetings

The North Smithfield Zoning Board will hold a meeting on Tuesday, July 11 starting at 7 p.m. at Town Hall at 83 Green St. The agenda is here.

The Municipal Building Review Task Force will hold a meeting on Thursday, July 13 starting at 5:30 p.m. at the police station at 575 Smithfield Road. The agenda is here.

The North Smithfield Sewer Commission will hold a meeting on Thursday, July 13 starting at 7 p.m. at Town Hall at 83 Green St. The agenda is here.

The North Smithfield Planning Board has cancelled their meeting originally scheduled for Thursday, July 13. The board’s next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, August 10.
