Summer fun kicks off with fireworks, music & more: Five things to know in Glocester this week

Crowds turned out over the weekend for the Glocester Business Association's annual Family Fun Day.

Summer recreation

With summer now in full swing, Glocester Recreation had several activities kicking off this week, including the Glocester Summer Running program, open to kids in 5th through 6th grade, and both youth and adult co-ed tennis. The Glocester Youth Track & Field event takes place this evening, on Tuesday, June 27, at Ponaganset High School, with registration starting at 5:30 p.m. and Hawaiian Jim’s shaved ice on site.

Safe sitters class

Glocester Manton Library will host a safe sitters class on Wednesday, June 28 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., geared for ages 11 to 14. Participants will learn about important babysitting topics including CPR, behavior management and injury prevention. Registration is required at the library at 1137 Putnam Pike, and the cost is $50.

Jesse Liam Band

Glocester’s summer concert series begins on Wednesday, June 28, when the Jesse Liam Band will play at the Kent Field Pavilion starting at 6:30 p.m. and both Dinolicious and Teddi’s food trucks on site.

The series will continue in the upcoming weeks with Brass Attack playing the same location on Wednesday, July 5 and Whiskey Road Band also at the pavilion on Wednesday, July 12.

On July 19, the fun moves to Chepachet Union Church with a performance by Kickin’ Brass Band. At the church on Wednesday, July 26, it will be Atwater Donelly, and Greystone Rail will close up the series on the grounds August 2.

Fireworks

The town will begin its annual Independence Day a celebration to include fireworks, food trucks, live entertainment and vendors at Glocester Memorial Park, just behind the Glocester Senior Center. The party starts at 5 p.m. with music by the White Shadows, and fireworks are set to start at 9 p.m.

The rain date for the event is Friday, July 7.

Town meetings

The Glocester Recreation Commission will hold a meeting on Tuesday, July 27 starting at 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall at 1145 Putnam Pike. The agenda is here.

The Glocester Land Trust will not hold a meeting on Tuesday, July 27.
