GLOCESTER – It was the desire to share a seemingly magical experience from her own childhood that inspired Glocester resident Diane Bernier Iskierski to publish her first children’s book.

Filled with positive messages for young readers, Iskierski’s book, “The Magic Coat,” was published last month by Newman Springs Publishing. It tells the tale of a young girl who finds a coat she can’t seem to take her eyes off of while out shopping with her parents, and, “the incredible discovery she makes when she tries it on.”

Iskierski, who was raised in Woonsockey and now lives in Glocester, spent more than 38 years working in the banking industry. Now a grandmother, Iskierski based the story on something she said happened to her as a ten-year-old child.

“This book is a true story of a young girl born of modest means, experiencing a miracle or what you might refer to as magic,” said Iskierski. “She is at a department store with her young parents when magic happens, just like a miracle. The most beautiful coat she had ever seen catches her attention and magic takes over.”

“This book teaches us that good things happen. Appreciate them when they do,” said Iskierski. “Don’t take things for granted. Believe in the goodness of people. Keep your eyes open. Pass on your good fortune. And lastly, the important things in life are not disposable.”

“I wanted to share a positive message,” Iskierski told NRI NOW.

The book, which she also illustrated, has been made available in both eBook and print formats by Newman Springs, a full service publishing house.

“With vibrant and colorful artwork to bring Iskierski’s tale to life, and a valuable feel-good message, young readers are sure to want to revisit The Magic Coat over and over again,” a release on the book noted.

The new author said she spends her spare time enjoying nature, going to Rhode Island beaches, traveling, kayaking, taking photographs, visiting antique shops, listening to music and reading. Most of all, she said, she enjoys spending time and making memories with family, friends, and neighbors.

“The Magic Coat” is now available at bookstores everywhere, or online at the Apple iBooks Store, Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
