NORTH SMITHFIELD – Two accidents in the area of Dunkin Donuts and Navigant Credit Union on Victory Highway held up traffic Tuesday afternoon while emergency responders transported two of the occupants to area hospitals.

According to North Smithfield Fire & Rescue Deputy Chief Thomas Dybala, the incident began when a single vehicle struck a utility pole. The white SUV-style vehicle hit the pole around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 14, and had to be towed from the scene.

“There was one person in the vehicle and he was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with what appear(ed) to be non-life threatening injuries,” Dybala said.

The pole was reportedly snapped at the base, causing a brief power outage in the area, and Rhode Island Energy called to the scene. Power was quickly restored to the all except one nearby property at 921 Victory Highway.

But while officials were cleaning up the first accident, Dybala said a second accident took place, a two- vehicle rear-end collision. One person in that accident was reportedly injured and was transported by a company responding to mutual aid, Harrisville Fire Department, to Landmark Medical Center.
