Friends wanted

The Friends of the Jesse M. Smith Library are looking to expand their membership.

Jacki Zahn, current acting president of the group notes that group has been together for 15 years and began as the capitol campaign aimed at building the library.

“We have taken on many projects, but our numbers are dwindling,” said Zahn. “We could use some new members with fresh ideas. We currently need a treasurer who can help manage the funds.”

In the past, the group has managed the Riverwalk Times concerts, two silent auctions a year; book sales, Flower Power fundraisers and vendor fairs. The group has provided funds for countless children’s programs, prizes and programs for summer reading, museum passes, furniture and snacks for the teen hangout, the new library website, and much, much more.

The Friends meet on the first Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at the library. For more information on the group, potential volunteers should attend the next meeting, or see any of the staff at the library.  They can also be contacted via email at jmslibraryfriends@gmail.com.

Stop the bleed

The town of Burrillville and the Burrillville Land Trust are bringing a Stop the Bleed workshop to Burrillville, a program that aims to turn bystanders into by-doers by teaching people how to save lives.

According to the RI Medical Reserve Corp, northwest Rhode Island is one of the areas in the state with few trained individuals who might be called on as a life-saving first responder. The workshop will teach participants how to respond to uncontrolled bleeding injuries, and is open and free to everyone. The town has provided funds for tourniquets to be given free of charge to town residents who take and complete the two hour training.

The worksop will be held on Saturday, March 11 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Jesse M. Smith Memorial Library. To pre-register, send an email to paul@paulroselli.com or call (401) 447-1560.
