Burn permits

The start of “permit required” open burning in North Smithfield began on Saturday, Oct. 8 and will continue through April 30. North Smithfield Fire & Rescue is encouraging all residents who wish to obtain permits to call the dispatch office at (401) 762-1135 on the day they’re hoping to burn to obtain information. If conditions are safe, the dispatcher will take the required information and issue a permit over the phone. Residents will not be required to visit the station.

Walkabout

It is the final week for Season 1 of Slatersville America’s First Mill Village, with Episode 5 set to premiere on Rhode Island PBS on Friday, Oct. 14. Watch for a story on the filming of the episode later this week.

The day after the season finale, Director Christian de Rezendes and producer Gail Denomme will take part in a ranger and filmmaker walkabout of the village. The event starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, with participants to meet in the parking lot of North Smithfield Public Library at 20 Main St., ending the walk in Slatersville Cemetery. Learn about the evolution of Slatersville while walking through the historic district.

The event is free and open to all, and no reservations are required. 

Library announces family Halloween events

The North Smithfield Public Library is accepting registrations for a variety of Halloweenpthemed programs that begin this week.

Treat and Paint will be held Saturday, Oct. 15 from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and is for children ages 9-14. Participants will paint a Halloween black cat.

Escape from the Haunted Mansion is an after-hours event for children ages 10-14, and will be held on Friday, Oct. 21 from 6-7 p.m. With the help of Mystery, Inc., players will work together to solve the mystery of Lady Fairmont’s Ghost. Take on the roles of these teen sleuths and their courageous canine pal, Scooby-Doo, to decode your way out of the haunted mansion. Registration is required and participants will have to ring the doorbell for admission as the library will be closed.

Circus Dynamics will perform on Thursday, Oct. 27 from 6-7 p.m. This family event is a fast-paced, audience-interactive, and highly technically skilled circus variety show. Full of laughs and incredible tricks, this top quality performance is non-stop energy and excitement. Audience members may be surprised when they get called up on stage and become part of the show. The 2nd half of this show will be done with the main lights off. Registration for the event is now open.

NSAA offers All Access Pass

The North Smithfield Athletic Association is now selling an “All Access Pass” for entrance to all NS home games for the 2022/2023 school year. Fans can purchase a single pass for $20 or a family pass for $40. Passes are tax deductible and all money raised will support North Smithfield athletes. Town meetings

North Smithfield Fire & Rescue Services will hold a meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 11 starting at 6:30 p.m. at 1470 Providence Pike. The agenda is here.

The North Smithfield Conservation Commission will hold a meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 12 starting at 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall at 83 Greene St.

The North Smithfield Planning Board will hold a meeting on Thursday, Oct. 13 starting at 7 p.m. at Town Hall at 83 Greene St. The agenda is here.
