Concession opening, art reception & tax bills: Five things to know in North Smithfield this week

Concession opening

A ribbon cutting for the new concession stand and bathroom at the North Smithfield High School Athletic Fields will take place on Wednesday, August 3, starting at 4 p.m. The event will include a brief presentation and a barbecue with hot dogs and hamburgers for visitors.

Tax bills

The town has announced that tax bills were mailed last week with the first quarter bill due by Monday, August 15. The rates are $13.914 for residential, $18.944 for commercial and $42.62 for tangible property. There are no motor vehicle taxes this year as the state of Rhode Island has eliminated the expense.

Meet the artists

The North Smithfield Art Committee will host a reception on Thursday, August 4 with three local photographers currently on exhibit at Town Hall. The public is invited to meet the photographers, who have different backgrounds and interests, for questions and conversation from 5 to 7 p.m.

Residents are also invited to to bring their own local photos to Town Hall throughout the summer to display as part of a community project.

Voter drive

The North Smithfield Democratic Town Committee will hold a voter registration drive on Saturday, August 6, from 9 to 11 a.m. The event will be held at Red, White, and Brew Coffeehouse at 601 Great Road.

The deadline to register to vote in the upcoming primary election is Sunday,August 14, and for the upcoming general election is Sunday, Oct. 9. The registration drives are open to all North Smithfield residents regardless of political affiliation.

NSDTC Chairman Paul Jones said the group will be planning more voter registration drives in the future, and that questions can be directed to NorthSmithfieldDTC@gmail.com.

Town meetings

The North Smithfield Town Council will hold a meeting on Monday, August 1 starting at 6:45 p.m. at Town Hall at 83 Green St. The agenda is here.

The Municipal Buildings Review Task Force will hold a meeting on Tuesday, August 2 starting at 5:30 p.m. at the North Smithfield Police station at 575 Smithfield Road. The agenda can be found here.

The North Smithfield Board of Canvassers will hold a meeting on Thursday, August 4 starting at 4 p.m. at Town Hall at 83 Green St. The agenda is here.

  1. Just remember if too many people use the bathroom the septic system will fail and then we will be getting another request for spending. Please note that the septic system will fail it is just a question of when.
