Self defense classes, Gatsby auditions: Five things to know in Burrillville this week

Burrillville fire departments sent 17 members to national training over the weekend.

Self defense

The Burrillville School Department has announced a six-week course in self-defense for students entering grades 7 through 10. The free class, taught by Matthew Zanni, will be offered Thursday afternoons from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Steere Farm Elementary School gym starting July 21.

Students must register, with spots to be filled on a first come, first serve basis. Those interested and able to commit to all six week should contact Julie Mayhew at mayhewj@bsd-ri.net.

Gatsby auditions

Auditions continue this week for GATSBY at The Assembly Theatre on Tuesday, July 12 and Thursday, July 15 from 7 to 10 p.m. Parts are open to actors age 16 plus for the upcoming performance at the theater at 26 East Ave., a new musical adaption of The Great Gatsby.

Golf Tournament

There is still time to sign up for the Burrillville Land Trust’s golf tournament to save Sweet’s Hill, to be held on Friday, July 22, starting at 8 a.m. at Crystal Lake Golf Club.

The event, a fundraiser for the purchase of the historic 150 acre Harrisville property, will include 18 holes of golf, dinner and prizes. Contact Roberta at (401) 368-0930 for more information.

Fire training

Over the weekend, 17 members from Burrillville fire departments attended National Fire Academy training in Emmitsburg, Md. The academy offered two days of classroom training with courses including strategy and tactics for fire company offices, exercising leadership and ethics and fire investigation. The national academy is considered the premiere learning facility in the country and all attendees received certification.

Expenses were paid for by academy itself, along with the Rhode Island Fire Chiefs Association.

Town meetings

The Burrillville Recreation Commission will hold a meeting on Monday, July 11 starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Department of Public Works office at 200 Clear River Drive. The agenda is here

The Burrillville School Committee will hold a meeting on Tuesday, July 12 starting at 6 p.m. in the Burrillville High School media center at 425 East Ave. The agenda is here.

The Burrillville Sewer Commission will hold a meeting on Tuesday, July 12 starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Wastewater Treatment Facility at 141 Clear River Drive. The agenda is here.

The Harrisville Fire District will hold a monthly meeting on Tuesday, July 12 starting at 7 p.m. at the station at 115 Central St. The agenda is here.

The Nasonville Fire District will hold a meeting on Tuesday, July 12 starting at 7 p.m. at the station at 2577 Victory Highway. The agenda is here.

There will be Zoning Board of Review hearing for the month of July.
