Summer tennis

Sign ups are now open for students in grades 1 through 9 for North Smithfield’s Summer Tennis Program to be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting on Tuesday, July 5 and ending on Thursday, August 11. The cost for the entire 12-lesson session is $75, or players can attend a limited number of lessons for $10 each.

Sessions will be held from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. for students in grades 1 through 4, and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. for grades 5 through 9 with Program Director and Coach Natalie O’Brien, who also serves as the North Smithfield High School Varsity Tennis coach.

Players must sign up using the bar code found here by Wednesday, June 15. Questions can be directed to O’Brien at nobrien@northsmithfieldschools.com.

Sewer comments

The town of North Smithfield’s Sewer Department has submitted three projects to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management Project Priority list: Phase 2 sewers, including Great Road; Phase 3 sewers, including Victory Highway; and improvements to existing sewer pump stations. Projects on this list may receive financial assistance and/or below market rate financing options through the Rhode Island Infrastructure Bank.

The public is encouraged to weigh in on the projects by submitting written comments to RI DEM via postal mail or email. Comments should be addressed to Jenny Paquet, Office of Water Resources, 235 Promenade St, Providence RI02908 or emailed to Jenny.Paquet@denmri.gov.

The deadline for comments is Friday, June 10.

Xpress Football & Cheer

Online registration is open through August 1 for North Smithfield’s Xpress Football & Cheer programs for children ages 4 through 14. Programs in flag football, at a cost of $100; tackle football at $150; or cheer for $50. Those who register by July 1 will save $25.

The league is also looking for volunteers, including coaches.

Memorial Day Parade

The LeClair Kozlik Logan Bassett VFW Post 6342 will be hosting the annual Veterans Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 30. Participants will meet at the Brigido’s Market parking lot at 10 a.m. and step off at 10:30, marching down Main Street and stopping at the Memorial Town Hall building for a ceremony, before completing the march to the Village Haven restaurant.

All veterans are welcome to march. Scouts are invited to participate along with the police and fire departments, and North Smithfield High School band.

There will be a coalition behind the Village Haven restaurant after the conclusion of the march. All are welcome to participate.

Town meetings

The North Smithfield Historic District Commission meeting originally scheduled for Monday, May 23 has been cancelled.

The North Smithfield Zoning Board will hold a meeting on Tuesday, May 24 starting at 7 p.m. at Town Hall at 83 Greene St. The agenda can be found here.
