Comedy fundraiser, free CPR class & budget vote delay: Six things to know in Glocester this week

The Glocester Historical Cemetery Committee thanked Willis Leonard this week for his work restoring the cemetery wall near Adler's Plaza on Route 44. During his spare time, Leonard has beed restoring the wall around the cemetery back to what it looked like more than 200 years ago. The committee has been working for more than two years to restore the cemetery to a more respected final resting place for some of the early settlers of Glocester. According to the committee, there were 42 burials in the DEA Joshua Winsor Lot from 1786 to 1903 including that of Joshua Winsor, a Revolutionary War Veteran who died in 1820.

Free CPR Class

In honor of National EMS Week, the Harmony Fire Department will offer a free CPR class to the public on Wednesday, May 18 at the station at 194 Putnam Pike from 6 to 9 p.m. There is a $10 charge for those who would like a CPR card at the end of the class, and cash or Venmo will be accepted. Organizers note the class provides a great opportunity for those who need a refresher and those who would like to learn what to do in an emergency.

Speaking of fire district, the Harmony Fire Department & Improvement Association will hold their 2nd annual pasta dinner fundraiser on Saturday, May 21 also at 194 Putnam Pike from 5 to 9 p.m. Dinner costs $10 per person and children under age 10 are free. Tickets can be purchased from any member.

Voting postponed

Town Clerk Jean Fecteau has announced that the financial town referendum for the proposed fiscal year 2022/2023 budget originally scheduled for Tuesday, May 24 at the Glocester Senior Center has been postponed. The town will announce a new public hearing date and budget voting date once both have been determined.

Comedy fundraiser

The Ponaganset High School Class of 2024 will hold a comedy fundraiser on Saturday, May 21 with doors to open at 6:30 p.m. at Foster Country Club at 67 Johnston Road. The 18 plus event will include a cash bar, raffles and a 50/50 drawing.

May Breakfast

Boy Scout Troop 44 Glocester will hold its annual May Breakfast on Saturday, May 21 from 7 to 10 a.m. at Chepachet Union Church. Tickets cost $8 each, with children ages five and under to eat free.

Tickets will be available at the door.

Elephant Day tours

The Glocester Heritage Society is offering Elephant Day Tours on Saturday, May 21 at 11 a.m., 12:30 and 2 p.m. The tour will take you from the Evans Schoolhouse at 1145 Putnam Pike through Chepachet Village, and end at the Job Armstrong Store in town.

Donations to benefit the Glocester Heritage Society are always welcome.

The West Glocester Fire District Executive Board will hold a meeting on Monday, May 16 starting at 5:30 p.m. at 2410 Putnam Pike. The agenda can be found here.
