MLK Day, tree pickup

Town Hall will be closed on Monday, Jan. 17 to observe Martin Luther King Day and all trash and recycling pickup will be delayed one day for the week.

The Department of Public Works is now picking up Christmas trees and curbside yard waste collection has ended.

Residents are also reminded not to line recycle bins with commercially sold liners, and that plastic shopping bags are not recyclable. Recycle bins with a liner or plastic bags will not be collected.

Art at Gator’s

Join local artist Angela Rondeau on Tuesday, Jan. 18 for a fun night creating decorative wine glasses. The event, from 6 to 9 p.m., costs $35 per person and will also include giveaways. To reserve a spot, call or text Rondeau at (401) 696-7757.

Register for Northmen 5K

Registration for the Northmen 5K, to be held Saturday, April 30 stating at 9 a.m., is now open. The run/walk race, organized by North Smithfield High School senior Calla Puccetti as part of her senior project, will support Operation Stand Down, a non-profit organization aiding homeless and at-risk veterans in Rhode Island.

The first 300 people to register for the race, which will start and finish at Veterans Memorial Stadium with a route along Providence Pike, at https://www.raceentry.com/northmen-5k/race-information, will receive a free t-shirt.

Dog licenses

Town officials remind residents that all dogs who live in the town of North Smithfield must be licensed by Sunday, April 30 to avoid a late fee. The cost is $6 per dog and proof of rabies immunization is required.

Residents can apply for or renew dog licenses online at https://northsmithfieldri.viewpointcloud.com. Those unable to access this program can mail a new or updated rabies certificate along with a check for $6. The office will send your original rabies certificate back to you with your license to the mailing address provided.

If none of the other options work, licenses are available at the Town Clerk’s office at 83 Greene St. Monday through Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Thursday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Friday from 8 a.m. to noon.
