Hydrant flushing

The North Smithfield Water Department will conduct hydrant flushing in the Slatersville, Forestdale, Great Road Mendon Road and Industrial Park areas beginning today. Monday, April 26 through Friday, April 30 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Flushing may cause a temporary reduction in water pressure and if discoloration occurs, residents are advised to run their cold water until it clears.

Questions should be directed to the water department at (401) 767-2200 ext. 320 or 305 between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Scholarship available

The Rev. William J. Frehill Council #5702 Knights of Columbus is now accepting applications for its 2021 scholarship.

The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic fraternal organization that actively provides assistance to those in need.

The $1,000 scholarship is awarded by the council based on financial hardship and involvement in community service. Applicants should be a 2021 North Smithfield High School graduating senior.

Applications are available in the Guidance Office at North Smithfield High School or by contacting pvsandman@yahoo.com to receive a copy. Applications must be returned by May 14, to be accepted.

The Frehill Council holds a car show each year to raise the funds used for the scholarship program. This year it will be held on Sunday, July 25, at the North Smithfield Middle School.

Dog licenses due Friday

All dogs in the town are required to be licensed with a deadline this year of Friday, April 30 to avoid a late fee. The cost is $6 per dog and proof of rabies immunization is required.

Residents can renew their license online at https://northsmithfieldri.viewpointcloud.com or mail an updated rabies certificate and check to Town Hall at 83 Green St.

Slatersville grant

The Rhode Island Council for the Humanities has announced a $12,000 grant for “Slatersville: America’s First Mill Village,” the eight-part documentary on the history of the village of Slatersville by filmmaker Christian de Rezendes. The grant was part of more than $150,000 in funding awarded to public projects and documentary films around the state.

“Slatersville” is expected to air on Rhode Island PBS in 2022.
