Letter: N.S. Democratic Town Committee condemns transgender comments

As proud residents of North Smithfield, we were disappointed to observe our neighbors’ belittling opinions of the LGBTQ+ community. We recognize their right to voice their opinion, but as North Smithfield residents and a unified Democratic Town Committee, we have a responsibility to unequivocally affirm the equality of all LGBTQ+ lives.

“We believe everyone is welcome in North Smithfield regardless of race, religion, or gender,” said Chase Fuller, of the NSDTC. “We hope our trans neighbors know that our town welcomes them and values their presence in our lives.”

“Make no mistake, the anti-LGBTQ comments made in the past few weeks are reprehensible and denouncing them is where this community should begin to devote itself to supporting and protecting the right of trans residents to transition,” said George Malian, a member of the committee.

The NSDTC believes in the right of all individuals to speak their mind and while our defense of that freedom knows no political ideology, this committee will not sit blindly by and tolerate hate speech. Trans lives matter, LGBTQ+ lives matter, and the focus of our elected leaders should be preserving the equality of all those who call North Smithfield home.

Recent remarks represent a betrayal of that mission. It is time for town officials and residents to afford North Smithfield’s trans community the respect that it deserves.
