Curbside yard waste collection begins April 12

Curbside yard waste collection begins in North Smithfield on Monday, April 12 and will run through Friday, June 11. Yard waste is collected on the same day as trash and recycling, if delayed it will be picked by Saturday of that week.

Residents can have a “reasonable amount,” of leaf bags or cans, clearly marked, of yard waste out at the curb for weekly collection.

Drop off hours at the Highway Garage at 281 Quaker Highway, will continue on Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and beginning April 7, will also take place on Wednesdays, from 3 to 6 p.m. Residents are welcome to bring yard waste or accepted recyclables. The town offers free drop off for rigid plastic and scrap metal items, as well as used motor oil.

Items should not be left outside the gate after business hours.

Cemetery clean up

The North Smithfield Heritage Association will hold its first clean-up of the year on Saturday, April 3 at Hotchkiss Cemetery starting at 9 a.m. The cemetery is located next to Union Cemetery on Smithfield Road.

Volunteers needed

The town is seeking volunteers to serve on several town boards with current vacancies, including two members for the Asset Management Committee, appointed by the Town Council; one member for the Economic Development Commission, appointed by the Town Administrator; and one member for the Sewer Commission appointed by the Town Council.
