NORTH SMITHFIELD – A routine patrol by a North Smithfield officer led to the discovery of a Worcester man in possession of a stolen firearm and more than $12,000 in cash this week.

Argelis Delacruz, 22, out of Worcester, Mass. was arrested as the result of the incident, which took place on Saturday, Oct. 3.

According to a release from the North Smithfield Police Department, Officer Kyle DelPrete was patrolling businesses in the area of Sayles Hill Road and Route-146 around 2:20 a.m. Saturday when he observed an occupied vehicle parked in the lot of one of the closed businesses.

DelPrete reportedly made contact with the two occupants of the vehicle and noticed the handgrip of a black pistol in the passenger’s waistband. DelPrete held the occupants at gunpoint until a backup officer arrived and the passenger was taken into custody.

Police seized a Glock 9mm from Delacruz, which was later confirmed to be stolen out of Allentown, Penn., along with $12,542 in cash.

Delacruz had an initial appearance before a Justice of the Peace and was released on $10,000 surety bail and required to appear in court at a later date.
