BURRILLVILLE – Johnny’s Victory Diner has been named best BBQ in Rhode Island by the publication Food & Wine.

Opened in 2018 by John and Rhonda Hanaway, the restaurant serves diner classics, alongside smoked meats, sandwiches and sides, such as classic cornbread and “Cowboy Pit Beans.”

“Mortgage banker turned barbecue hobbyist turned restaurateur turned proud owner of a 1930s diner, John Hanaway is one of those people appearing to possess a boundless energy for reinvention,” notes the publication in an article named The United States of BBQ. “Alongside wife, Rhonda, Johnny’s Victory Diner has become exactly the sort of thing you would hope to find in a place like Rhode Island.”

The Hanaways purchased the business, first opened in the 1930s, and have maintained its classic diner charm while adding their own flare, as well as dinner options. At the time it, was known as Monty’s Victory Diner.

“First of all, it’s still an actual, honest-to-goodness New England counter joint, with creative breakfast specials and a loyal following,” notes the article, pointing to the diner’s “massive, custom-built barrel smoker,” fired up to cook pulled pork, brisket, and ribs for Friday night BBQ.

The restaurant at 2731 Victory Highway is currently open for both indoor and outdoor dining from 7 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday; and 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday.
