Today is Monday, Jan. 13. Here are five things you need to know in North Smithfield this week:

Canned pasta

The North Smithfield Food Pantry has announced that the “Flavor of the Month,” for January is canned pasta.

The pantry is currently seeking unopened containers of canned pasta, and any donations or monetary gifts can be dropped off at the Slatersville Congregational Church between 9 a.m. and noon.

You can also mail monetary gifts to P.O. Box 1128, Slatersville, RI 02876. An additional drop box for food items is available at the Town Hall during regular business hours.

Hearing continued

The North Smithfield Planning Board held a public hearing on Thursday, Jan. 9 on approval of a master plan for Green Energy Development’s 38-megawatt solar array on Iron Mine Hill Road.

Due to extensive participation by residents, the board is planning a second public hearing, which has been tentatively set for Thursday, Feb. 6.

Little league registration

Registration is now open for North Smithfield Little League’s 2020 season, which runs from April through the end of June. The cost is $85 per player through March 1, when it increases to $110.

Players age 8 and older playing in the AAA & Majors baseball divisions must try-out. Tryouts are scheduled for early March, so players must be registered online March 1. Try-out dates and time will be announced on the NSLL’s website and Facebook page. To register, visit: www.northsmithfieldll.com.

NSLL is always looking for baseball and softball coaches. Experience is not required.

Dog licensing

All dogs in North Smithfield are required to be licensed by April 30 after which owners will be charged a late fee. The cost is $6 per dog, and proof of rabies immunization is required.

Licenses are available at the Town Clerk’s office located at the Municipal Annex, 575 Smithfield Road, Monday through Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Friday from 8 a.m. to noon.

Town meetings

The North Smithfield Sewer Commission will hold their regular meeting on Wednesday,  Jan. 15, starting at 7 p.m. at the Primrose Fire Station for an agenda that can be found here.

The North Smithfield Planning Board will hold a meeting on Thursday, Jan. 16 on the town’s capital budget, including a five-year projection, starting at 7 p.m. at the Primrose Fire Station.
