Holiday Concert, juice needed: Five things to know in N. Smithfield this week

Holiday concert

The North Smithfield High School Music Department will present the school’s 2019 Holiday Concert on Wednesday, Dec. 18 and Thursday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m., and again on Friday, Dec. 20 at 9 a.m.

Ticket sales opened to the public today, Monday,  Dec 16, and cost $10.

Christmas at the library

North Smithfield Public Library will host several holiday-related events this week including a penguin ornament making event for kids ages 3 to 7 on Tuesday, Dec. 17 starting at 4:30 p.m.

On Wednesday at 4 p.m. children ages 7-10 are invited to sign up to turn a plain glass ball into a sparkling gingerbread girl or boy’s head.

On Wednesday at 6 p.m., share a cookie, cup of cocoa, and some old and new Christmas stories at the library at an all ages event after signing up.

Tree disposal

The town of North Smithfield’s Recycling Department has announced that curbside pickup of live Christmas trees will begin on Thursday, Dec. 26 and continue through Jan. 10, 2020.

Live trees are composted and artificial trees are recycled with scrap metal.

All trees must be free of ornaments, tinsel, lights, and cannot be in plastic bags.

Live trees will be picked up by DPW on your trash day, weather permitting. Residents can also bring the trees to DPW when the recycling center is open. Winter hours of operation are Saturday from 9 a.m.  to 1 p.m.

Juice needed

The North Smithfield Food Pantry has announced that the “Flavor of the Month,” for December is juice.

The pantry currently feeds about 90 families and is in need of more volunteers. Volunteers are needed to help with pickup and delivery of donated food; help on Wednesday and Friday mornings from 9:30-10:15 to sort food; help when the food pantry is open on the last two Tuesdays of the month from 5:30 – 7 p.m., and the last two Saturdays 10 – 11 a.m. to help with clients and carry bags to clients’ cars, and more. Those interested should contact Rev Eileen at 769-2773.

The pantry is currently seeking unopened containers of juice and any donations or monetary gifts can be dropped off at the Slatersville Congregational Church between 9 a.m. and noon. You can also mail monetary gifts to P.O. Box 1128, Slatersville, RI 02876. An additional drop box for food items is available at the Town Hall during regular business hours.

Town meetings

The North Smithfield Historic District Commission will hold their regular meeting on Monday, Dec. 16 starting at 6:30 p.m. at 10 Green St. for an agenda that can be found here.

The North Smithfield Town Council will hold their regular meeting on Monday starting at 6 :45 p.m. at North Smithfield Middle School for an agenda found here.

The North Smithfield School Committee will hold their regular meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 17 starting at 6:30 p.m. for an agenda found here.

The North Smithfield Sewer Commission will hold their regular meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. at Primrose Fire Station for an agenda found here.
