EPA meeting, drive-by recycling: Five things to know in North Smithfield

Victory Day

The town of North Smithfield will have no trash or recycling pickup on Monday, Aug. 10 and town offices will be closed in honor of Victory Day. Collections will be postponed one day for the remainder of the week.

EPA meeting

The Environmental Protection Agency will hold a formal virtual public hearing on the agency’s proposal to clean up the Oxford Road Superfund site on on Wednesday, Aug. 12 at 7 p.m.

Electronics Recycling “Drive By” Drop Off Event

The North Smithfield Department of Public Works will hold a drive by recycling event on Saturday, Aug. 15 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 281 Quaker Highway.

Items accepted at no charge include computers, laptops, monitors, televisions, routers, PDA’s, cell phones, mice, keyboards, inkjet printers, plastic speakers, toner cartridges, CD/DVD players, radios, network equipment, wires, stereos, telephones, microwaves, small household appliances, and auto/marine batteries, and battery back-ups.

A $10 disposal fee applies to each large wooden-boxed speaker ($5 for small), laser-jet printer, air conditioner, dehumidifier, and other coolant containing devices.

Items not accepted include light bulbs, household batteries, fire/carbon monoxide detectors, tapes/disks, glass, broken TV tubes, Styrofoam, or any hazardous waste materials.

Online licensing

The town of North Smithfield is now offering online licensing services including most general business applications.

If you need to apply for a license of any kind or renew for the year, visit https://northsmithfieldri.viewpointcloud.com

Applications include dog licensing, flea markets, dry cleaning, pet boarding, mobile food trucks, liquor licensing and more.

The town is requesting that all businesses use this website when dealing with applying or renewing your license/registration. A valid email address is required to use the system.

Town meetings

The North Smithfield Buildings Review Task Force will hold a meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 11 starting at 5:30 p.m. The agenda and instructions to attend can be found here.

As on Monday, Aug. 10, no other town meeting agendas were listed on the Secretary of State’s website. Residents can visit the site to check for upcoming meetings here.
