Defensive driving course

Senior Services, Inc. will host an AAA Defensive Driving Course on Tuesday, Nov. 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Scouters Hall.

The free 4-hour program will include a half hour lunch break and boxed lunch will be available with a suggested donation of $3.

Pre-registration is required to reserve your spot by calling 401-766-3734.

Many insurance companies offer discounts on insurance premiums for completing the course.

Feeder watch

The North Smithfield Public Library is looking for residents who want to help scientists track winter birds. Visit the library anytime from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays or Wednesdays through the end of the month and take a bird count. Pick up a sheet and watch for two minutes. How many birds do you see? Do you know what kind they are? Watch the library’s bird count grow each week.

The program is scheduled to run on dates through January.

Yard waste

Curbside yard waste pickup started in North Smithfield in October, and will continue through Friday, Dec. 6. Yard waste is collected on the same day as  trash and recycling.  According to town officials, residents can have a “reasonable” amount of leaf bags or cans, clearly marked, of yard waste out at the curb for weekly collection.

Drop off hours at the Highway Garage at 281 Quaker Highway, meanwhile, have changed and will continue on Saturdays only from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. until April 1, 2020. Residents are welcome to bring yard waste or accepted recyclables. The town offers free drop off for rigid plastic and scrap metal items as well as used motor oil. Residents are warned not to leave items outside the gate after business hours; as officials will take notice.
