BURRILLVILLE – A life flight was called to the scene of a serious accident on Wallum Lake Road Tuesday afternoon after the jaws of life were used to extract the occupant from the vehicle.

Emergency personnel were called to the motor vehicle crash in the area of 400 Wallum Lake Road around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8 for reports of a black pickup truck crashing into a pole and a tree, according to Col. Stephen Lynch.

The vehicle was reportedly traveling north, approximately a mile north of Serio’s Pizza, when the operator lost control of his vehicle and left the roadway to the east bound side of the street. The truck first struck a telephone pole, splitting it, then rolled over north into a storage container on a homeowner’s front lawn, and then into a tree, where the vehicle was bent completely around the tree.

Pascoag and Harrisville Fire and EMS were able to cut the operator from the vehicle using multiple jaws of life apparatus, according to Lynch.

The operator was transported from the scene by Pascoag rescue to the Zambarano Hospital parking lot, where he was then life-flighted to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment.

Lynch said an investigation of the incident is still underway, but that speed appeared to be a factor in the crash.

The crash caused a power outage in the area, and crews with the Clear River Water & Electric District worked quickly to restore service.

“Pole and wires are on the ground,” noted CREW. “We hope to have power restored as soon as possible.”

Lynch said additional information on operator ID and his condition would be released on Wednesday.
