Grand opening, candy collection & America’s Favorite Teacher: Six things to know in Glocester this week

America’s favorite teacher

Ponaganset Middle School teacher Jamie LaRose is in the running to become America’s Favorite Teacher in a Reader’s Digest contest to win $25,000 and a trip to Hawaii. LaRose who has served as a basketball, tennis, softball and volleyball coach at Ponaganset schools, is a Glocester resident, who has also volunteered for the Burrillville Glocester Youth Soccer Organization, Glocester Little League and the Glocester Recreation Commission.  

Votes in the national contest can be cast for free once a day here.

Grand opening & workshops

A new Glocester business offering guests the chance to make their own flower arrangements will hold a grand opening this weekend withhours on Saturday and Sunday. The Stem Bar at 6 Money Hill Road will host a grand opening event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March 1 and 2. The business has also scheduled beginner-friendly flower arrangements workshops on March 8 & March 22 at 6 p.m.

Pantry help

Resident Lew Pryeor has teamed up with Dino’s Park & Shop at 1020 Putnam Pike to help feed those in need and will be purchasing 20 prepared meals this week for distribution at the Glocester Food Pantry. Dino’s has offered to provide food at a discount to help with the effort, which also includes food distribution to the homeless across the state.

Candy

Glocester Manton Library at 1137 Putnam Pike is accepting candy donations for the upcoming Easter Egg Hunt. The annual event will be held in April and candy should be dropped off by Saturday, April 5.

Live entertainment

Catch some live entertainment in town this week with a show at Hill’s Tavern at 417 Putnam Pike on Saturday, March 1 with Whiskey Knights starting at 8:30 p.m. On Sunday, Decked Out will play at the tavern from 2 to 6 p.m.

At Cady’s Tavern at 2168 Putnam Pike, the band Rockslide will debut on Saturday with a show at 8 p.m. and Sunday’s weekly Roadhouse Blues starts at 3 p.m.

Town meetings

The Glocester Recreation Commission will hold a meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 25 starting at 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall at 1145 Putnam Pike. The agenda is here.
