NORTH SMITHFIELD – With only ten of the 11 declared candidates returning signed nomination papers to North Smithfield Town Hall prior to the deadline this week, the town will not require a primary in September to narrow down the field.

Michael Desrosiers did not return signed papers by the 4 p.m. deadline on Friday, July 12. Town Clerk Joanne Buttie noted that a primary is held whenever a race includes at least one more than double the number of open seats for any given position.

In the race for a seat on the North Smithfield School Committee, all five candidates who declared the intent to run submitted signed papers for three open seats. They include incumbent Vice Chairperson Jean Meo; as well as Christopher Simpkins, Evan Masse, Bradley Trenchard and David de la Cruz.

And with just two candidates remaining in the race for town administrator, that office also will not warrant a primary.

On the council, incumbent Council President Kimberly Alves, along with councilors Douglas Osier, John Beauregard and Claire O’Hara will seek another term, while facing challenges from a slew of contenders in the non-partisan race for the five-member board. Turning in completed papers in the non-partisan race this week were Ann Lilley; Rebecca DeChristofaro; Kevin Newton; Joey Sevigny; David Punchak and Anthony Guertin.

To appear on the November ballot, the candidates were all required to obtain the signatures of 50 eligible North Smithfield voters. Those signatures must now be verified, and those planning to run still have until Monday, July 15 to withdraw from the race.

All 2024 political candidates who declare the intent to run in Burrillville, North Smithfield and Glocester are invited to send information announcing their campaign with a headshot, as well as a total of three press releases/position statements leading up to the November election for publication to [email protected].

  1. Why not name the two people still running for Town administrator? I think I can guess who dropped out but I would prefer to have documented.
