Letter: Kim Alves is the clear choice for N.S. town council

Last evening, my husband and I voted in support of Kim Alves for the North Smithfield Town Council. Kim is one leader that has demonstrated character and dependability, in light of some very troubled waters. Difficult choices have been made, and while we may not have agreed on all issues, we know that Kim has always voted with North Smithfield residents and taxpayers, as her top priority.

Kim had the fortitude to know that when the voters rejected the $18,000,000 bond for the police station, she chose the Town Council, to act as the MBRTF, responsible for repairs to bring it up to code, with a substantial savings to all taxpayers.

Kim recognized that, in light of unprofessional conduct, the town required an independent human resource manager and is working towards that goal.

Kim understood that our most precious commodity, water, needed protection and assisted in the development of the Groundwater Protection Committee.

Kim knows that financial decisions, made without the appropriate oversight could negatively impact the taxpayer and has striven for accountability regarding town finances.

Kim acts professionally and ethically with all members of the community that she serves.

Please keep this in mind when voting:  Kim acts and votes in your best interest, not special interests.

  1. Ms. Depault, you mentoned Kim Alves said “you will be respected”. However, in watching many TC meetings on youtube it is very evident that Alves does not respect other town council members as well as residents. The way Alves and Hamilton speak to other TC members and town residents is disgusting and should not be tolerated. It is a disgrace to the town of NS. It is a good thing Hamilton is not running again, because she had her many years of lies and unlawful actions, Alves needs to learn how to better speak to people in general.

  2. “There will be positive change going forward,” Alves said. “The Town Council works for you, the voters of North Smithfield. You will be respected, and you will get answers. We are on this journey together.” (NRI Now Dec.22,2022)
Kim Alves has kept her inaugural promise. Despite many controversial issues, she kept the taxpayer’s voice in the forefront.
Once the controversial police station issue was resolved, she honored the voter’s choice by swiftly moving forward to make the building safe and clean for the employees. The pursuit of a viable rehabilitation of our long neglected property was sought out and is now in progress.
Kim Alves immediately recognized the lack of sufficient employee protection in the workplace edified by 2 harrasment suits. She sought out a safer working environment by advocating for an unbiased human resource representative.
She has respected the majority rule duties assigned to her as president of the council. For example, she accepted the criticism resulting from impartially enforcing the taxing impact of a fellow councilman’s request to impose a 3 minute time limit on good and welfare comments.
The voters chose Kim Alves to honor their voice. She has worked within the established perimeters of our government to do so. It has been a challenging journey, but her leadership skills have been an asset to us all. She deserves to be returned to the council.
