NORTH SMITHFIELD – Sen. Jessica de la Cruz has officially declared her candidacy for re-election to the Rhode Island Senate representing District 23 in North Smithfield, Burrillville and Glocester.

“I love Rhode Island and the communities I have the privilege to represent,” said de la Cruz. “I look forward to hearing the issues that are foremost on the minds of constituents as I return to the campaign trail. I know first-hand the struggles of working families and will continue to deliver common-sense solutions that benefit all of our residents.”

As a Republican and Senate minority leader, de la Cruz said she has shown her commitment to continuing her work in healthcare, education and the economy. She notes that she has been a leading advocate for the state’s most vulnerable populations, securing more than $100 million to rebuild and revitalize Zambarano Hospital in Burrillville and closing a loophole in state law to protect children from sexual predators. Through bipartisan efforts, de la Cruz notes she has worked with federal and state leaders on the overdue Route 146 infrastructure projects and successfully prioritized Route 94, with work set to begin this year. Additionally, she notes she championed transparency in hospital pricing as part of Senate leadership’s health package and sponsored legislation to improve guardianship options for disabled and elderly residents.

“Serving my neighbors and our state is my distinct honor,” de la Cruz said. “If re-elected, I will remain focused on improving the lives and livelihoods of Rhode Islanders and continue to work diligently to ensure government is more accountable, more accessible and more responsive to the taxpayers and residents of our state.”
