Comedy dinner, Wright blood drive: Six things to know in North Smithfield this week

Yard waste pickup

It is the final week the town’s yard waste pickup, with bags and labeled cans to be picked up through the end of the week. The town’s new trash program is set to begin in July.

Rescheduled water outage

A water shut down in the area of Country Way originally scheduled for Tuesday, June 11 was rescheduled last week and is now set to take place on Monday, June 17 starting at 10 p.m. The eight hour shut down will allow for for demolition and removal of the water tank on the road. Affected properties, including homes on School Street, Maple Avenue, Country Way and Halliwell Boulevard, will receive notices hand-delivered to their door.

Juneteenth

Town Hall will be closed on Wednesday, June 19 in observance of Juneteenth. There will be no trash and recycling pick up on Wednesday, and the collection schedule will be delayed one day for the remainder of the week.

Scott Wright Blood Drive

The annual blood drive in memory of Scott Wright will be held on Thursday, June 20 from noon to 8 p.m. at The Village Haven at 90 School St. Since the first blood drive in Wright’s memory was held in 2011, more than 2,300 people have reportedly turned out to donate, saving many lives.

Appointments are preferred, but walk-ins will be welcomed if space permits. To schedule an appointment, visit ribc.org/drives using sponsor code #4017.

Comedy dinner

The North Smithfield Heritage Association will host a comedy dinner fundraiser on Saturday, June 22 at the Village Haven Restaurant at 90 School St. The event will include family-style chicken dinner starting at 6 p.m. followed by comedian Dave Kane presenting Jokes My Irish Father Told Me. Tickets cost $35 and can be purchased at Village Paint at 900 Victory Highway or North Smithfield Town Hall at 83 Green St. Proceeds will benefit restoration of the upper hall in the Memorial Town building.

Town meetings

The North Smithfield Town Council will hold a meeting on Monday, June 17 starting at 6:45 p.m. at Town Hall at 83 Green St. The agenda is here.

The North Smithfield School Committee will hold a meeting on Tuesday, June 18 starting at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria of North Smithfield Middle School at 1850 Providence Pike. The agenda is here.
