North Smithfield students bring home nine first place awards from NYC Festivals of Music

NORTH SMITHFIELD – North Smithfield music students brought home awards in every category following a trip to New York City this month to compete in the Festivals of Music.

The North Smithfield High School choir received the first place, “excellent,” designation for testoster tones, and the first place “superior,” rating for the select, chamber and concert divisions.

Additionally, the concert choir received the overall award for best choir.

Band students received a first place superior rating for the concert ensemble, the jazz ensemble and the concert band, and the concert band received the, “overall best,” designation.

Led by Chorus Director Regina McAdam and Band Director Kevin Plouffe, the young musicians traveled to the city for the competition. More than 200 students and 22 chaperones made the trip leaving Friday, March 31 and returning Sunday, April 2. The group visited local attractions including Medieval Times and also caught a Broadway performance of the musical Wicked.

The trip followed recent achievements for the students that included a collaboration with the Hofstra University Chamber Choir, and superior ratings for all four groups at the Rhode Island American Choral Directors Association senior division choral festival.

The music students are now preparing with for the annual spring concert, with ticket details expected soon.
