BURRILLVILLE – The company that was looking to build a “glamping” style campground on a Boy Scout property in Burrillville has reportedly withdrawn their application after hearing the noise level from a nearby race track.
Brooklyn-based Getaway, a business that markets tiny cabins and campsites where visiting urban dwellers can unplug and reconnect with nature had submitted a proposal to build a 65-unit outpost on a 180-acre area within the Buck Hill Scout Reservation. The company hoped to add Burrillville to a list of more than 30 destinations across the country where visitors could, “create distance from the relentless demands of work, schedules, and technology.”
The project would have repurposed a property owned by the Rhode Island Boy Scouts long known as Cub World, reusing existing structures at the scout camp, including a garage, lodges, cell towers and septic, and adding 140 to 200 square-foot, “cabins,” complete with heat and air conditioning
It went before the Planning Board in February, and members voted unanimously to approve Getaway’s master plan for the three lots off of Buck Hill Road, also granting the plan a positive recommendation. The project was next headed to zoning, where the company planned to apply for a special use permit.
But then, company officials visited the property on a spring night.
After hearing the noise from Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park, a race track located roughly 3.5 miles away in Thompson, Conn., Getaway withdrew the application.
“I understand that they visited the site on the weekend and decided to pull the application based on what they experienced,” said Town Planner Raymond Goff.
For now, it seems, those seeking the tranquility offered at Getaway’s outposts will have to wait for the business to find a more suitable location in the Ocean State.
Duly agree with Mr. Dionne’s take on the matter. Being on Collins Taft Rd. Harrisville, am 12 miles from Thompson, but the race track sounds as if it is only a few miles away, vrs the 12 mi it actually is.
In comparison Woonsocket is only 10 miles away and never hear any noise from.
Between the Rod & Gun a half mile from the house, with the constant reports of gun fire from morn till dusk,
and the noise from the track, am surly in a pinch when seeking true quiet & solitude in the surrounding nature.
We can only hope that RI Dem, The Nature Conservancy, Audubon or some other conservation minded organization can acquire it strictly for it’s conservation value otherwise some developer will certainly try their best to attempt to get it rezoned for individual house lots. Things like this have a way of happening in our beloved little town.
I want to start off by saying that I love anything with an engine BUT the noise from that track, be it on the weekend or on any weekday is ridiculous. Whether it be motorcycles or drifting, it is too much. I’m not surprised on the withdrawal. There would have been A LOT of pissed off campers during events at the speedway. I live in East Putnam and can clearly here them time to time.
