Egg Hunt, tryouts & a figure skating show: Five things to know in Burrillville this week

Wendy Andrews scholarship

The Friends of the Jesse M. Smith Memorial Library are offering a $500 scholarship in memory of long-standing chairperson Wendy S. Andrews, who passed away unexpectedly in 2022.  The Wendy S. Andrews Scholarship will be available to one graduating high school senior who is a resident of the town of Burrillville and has been accepted at an accredited college, university, or community college/technical school for the 2023/2024 academic year.

Andrews led the group for more than 15 years, and according to board members, “her presence, devotion and smile are greatly missed.”

“We hope that Wendy’s legacy to our library and the Town of Burrillville will live on through this memorial scholarship in her name,” said acting President Jacki Zahn.

Applications are available at the Jesse M. Smith Memorial Library and on their website, and can also be requested by emailing jmslibraryfriends@gmail.com.  Completed applications must be submitted at the library by Monday, May 1, and the winner will be announced by Thursday, June 1.

Egg hunt

The Burrillville Parks & Recreation Department’s annual Easter Egg Hunt will take place on Saturday, March 25 at Branch River Park by Burrillville Middle School. The event will begin with brunch at the Dinolicious food truck starting at 10:30 a.m.and running through 1:30 p.m. It will include raffle tables and participation by the Easter Bunny and “Buckleupallofus” before or after the egg hunt, open to kids ages 8 and under, to be held at 11 a.m. Participants should bring a basket to collect eggs.

Little League tryouts

Burrillville Little League will hold tryouts for the upcoming season on Saturday, March 25 at Peck Park for ages 8-12 years old starting at 10 a.m. Players that are registered for player pitch and players registered for majors that are not currently placed on a team must show up. They should bring anything needed for a typical practice including cleats, gloves, a bat and a helmet.

Figure skating show

The Burrillville Figure Skating Association will hold its 50th Annual Show on Sunday, March 26 from noon to 1:50 p.m. at Levy Ice Rink at 425 East Ave. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Town meetings

The Burrillville School Committee Field Subcommittee will hold a meeting on Tuesday, March 21 starting at 5:30 p.m. in the media center at Burrillville High School at 425 East Ave. The agenda is here.

Bonus “thing”: Purple Heart Meet & Greet

The Guardians of the Purple Heart will host a meet & greet at the Townsmen Club in Mapleville on Sunday, March 26 from noon to 4 p.m. Guests will have the chance to learn about the charitable group”s mission, purchase merchandise or make a donation. The organization will have raffles for baskets as well as a 50/50 and will be accepting new member applications.
