BURRILLVILLE – In a crash that Burrillville Police Lt. William Lacey noted could have been, “much worse,” a man was transported to the hospital with minor injuries Thursday morning after the motorcycle he was driving collided with a school bus.

The accident took place on Central Street around 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 16, when the bike operator was headed eastbound.

“At some point during the crash he lost control of his bike,” Lacey said. “We think he knew he lost control and he sort of dumped it.”

The riderless motorcycle went on to collide with the front tire of the school bus, which was between its elementary and secondary school runs and unoccupied, minus the driver. It was later driven from the scene.

The bike driver was transported to the hospital with what appeared to be minor injuries, including road rash, Lacey said. The motorcycle was towed from the scene based on damages.

Lacey noted it was an accident officers initially feared may have been much worse.

“When you hear a motorcycle crashed with a bus you say, ‘oh no,'” Lacey said. “It was not as bad as it could have been.”

Police are still investigating if weather-related conditions may have been a factor in the accident.
