NORTH SMITHFIELD – A couple was arrested at the Traveler’s Motor Lodge in an incident that began with an assault on a guest, and ended with two felony counts for one woman who reportedly attacked responding officers.

Danielle Smith, 28, of Fall River, and Xavier Ricks, 28, of Pawtucket, are both facing charges from the incident at the Eddie Dowling Highway motel on Monday, Feb. 20.

According to the arrest reports, officers were called to the property for reports of a fight in the parking lot around 5 p.m., and separated the parties on arrival.

Management told police that the guests in one room had been drinking, and surveillance video showed Ricks walking up to another guest and punching him in the face. The 68-year-old victim reportedly had Injuries to nose and upper lip, and said he wished to place charges.

Motel officials told police that they wanted all guests in Ricks’s room to leave, but his girlfriend, Smith, said she couldn’t find her car keys.

Ricks was placed under arrest without incident, but Smith immediately “became belligerent,” according to officers, with outbursts where she would scream profanities while waving her hands in their faces. Reports note that Smith made physical contact with officers while flailing – as they attempted to locate her keys.

“I understood that Danielle was upset, which is why I attempted to warn her an exorbitant amount of times,” notes a narrative on the arrest by Sgt. John Babineau.

Police eventually placed Smith under arrest, but according to police she resisted, and began kicking the plexiglass partition once she was placed in the cruiser. Once at the station, she charged at Babineau, attempting to head butt him according to reports. As she was placed in a cell, she landed several, “mule kicks,” and officers document difficulty getting out of the small space due to the cell’s inward swinging door.

“I tried to exit the cell and close the door at the same time, but Smith got up and tried getting out of the cell, at which time I pushed her back, causing her to fall to the floor, allowing me enough time to exit the cell and close the inward swinging cell door,” noted that report by Lt. Eric Rondeau.

Smith was charged with two felony counts of assault on an officer, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Ricks was charged with assault on a person over the age of 60 and disorderly conduct.
