NORTH SMITHFIELD – A search is underway in the area of Pound Hill, Mattity and Bearskin Farm Roads in North Smithfield for a missing man family members say has diminished capacities.

Philip Emond, 62, had been missing for several hours on Wednesday, Nov. 16 when a search of woods in the area reportedly began. Emond has brown/grey hair and is 5’9″ and around 185 pounds, according to police. He was last seen wearing black pants, a black hooded sweatshirt and blue shoes. He uses a cane and was last seen in the Mattity Road area.

Among those conducting a grid search Wednesday night were agencies from North Smithfield, Burrillville, Central Falls and others. Search teams had deployed drones and were using thermal imaging in hopes to detect body heat on the cold night, also involving K-9s in the operation.

Officials said the family recently moved to town from North Providence.

Anyone with information regarding Emond’s whereabouts is asked to contact the North Smithfield Police Department at (401) 762-1212.

  1. Wonderful news, he has been found safe. Thanks to all those who searched and the awesome efforts always, of the LE heroes we hear too little of out there doing fantastic work! Put security/alert ring cams all around that ID open doors, motion outside…if not already. Big help. IMMEDIATE ALERT TO CELL TEL also, no matter where you are. Prayers and best wishes for a Happy Holiday Season!

  2. Fortunately, according to Channel 10 he has been located. A big shout out to all the personnel in various towns and the volunteers that searched. Thank you.

  3. My heart is aching for this family. I will pray for his safe return! My life’s work is caring for the elders, especially those afflicted with what Mr Emond is suffering from. I understand the difficulties and challenges of these diseases. It is not easy for anyone.

  4. Probably trying to find his way back to his old town he was recently removed from…that he knows/remembers/feels safe in…before he suffered some cognitive impairment. Prayers in finding him safe and sound soon!

    • You may be right about that. I’m really surprised the dogs could not pick up any scents. I really hope he didn’t end up in any ponds around there. I don’t feel good about this only for the fact that it’s freezing and it doesn’t sound like he’s dressed that warm. Praying for his safe return. May God be watching over him right now.
