NORTH SMITHFIELD – The Rhode Island Department of Transportation has announced that a lane split will be implemented by the bridge project on Great Road beginning this Sunday.

General travel for motorists will not be affected according to RIDOT, however, access may be hindered for larger trucks attempting to access Lapre Road, which may have to use Hillview Avenue.

The lane split will go into effect on Sunday, Oct. 30 and remain in place for two weeks.

RIDOT officials said after the two weeks, the two travel lanes will shift back together closer to Lapre to establish a work zone on the far side of the bridge.

The news follows a second announcement on Tuesday, Oct. 25 that Route 146 will have nighttime lane and road closures beginning the same day.

  1. If a large truck gets past the intersection at CT Gas and continues on toward Great Rd and is detoured onto Hillview to Lapre, it looks like the only option would be to use Oaklawn to get back to Great Rd in the opposite direction. Those roads are ill suited for that kind of traffic.
They best make sure big trucks are not allowed to make it that far. Also, deliveries to Wright’s Dairy need a sign so that when they come out of Woonsocket Hill Rd at Great Rd, they are not allowed to make a left turn… And to repeat myself, Pound Hill Rd has a 5 ton weight limit starting at Great Rd. Sending them down that way to 146 should not be an option.

  2. What’s the detour plan for errant trucks that end up on Great Rd from Greenville Rd/Providence Pike area? Can’t send them down Pound Hill Rd, it has a 5 Ton weight limit.

“(29) There shall be no through trucking of commercial vehicles in excess of five tons total weight with
cargo, unless for home service delivery, and business service delivery on Pound Hill Road from
the Providence Pike (Route 5) intersection to the Industrial Drive intersection, and in the
immediate area from Pole 39 Pound Hill Road to Route 146-A Great Road, North Smithfield”

  3. I am so tired of this project. If the company actually worked on the project the bridge would have been done over a year ago. When I do see workers most are just standing around and work time is like 9 to 2.
