Alpaca Farm Days, Booth Pond walk: Five things to know in North Smithfield this week

Voter registration day

In honor of National Voter Registration Day, North Smithfield Public Library will offer residents the opportunity to become a voter and register at the library at 20 Main St. on Tuesday, Sept. 20. Visit the library from 3 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday to register.

Trail walk

The North Smithfield Land Trust will host a guided walk of Booth Pond Conservation Area on Saturday, Sept. 24, as part of RI Land Trust Days. The 130-acre conservation area features the pond, surrounding wetlands and upland forest. The first half of the walk is of moderate difficulty and the group will return to the trailhead before starting the second half. For those who wish to continue, the second portion has some sections with challenging uphill and downhill terrain, and participants are advised that a walking stick may be helpful. There is a scenic overview of the surrounding area at a lookout point at the higher elevation.

Those joining the hike should wear comfortable hiking shoes, and bring bug spray and water. Visitors should park near the ALDI store and walk down toward The Club apartment complex. Participants will meet by the green trailhead sign on the right.

No registration is necessary for the event, which is free and suitable for all ages.

Alpaca Farm Days

Hidden Nook Alpaca Farm will host a two-day event this week in celebration of National Alpaca Farm Days, opening the farm at 462 Greenville Road to the public on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 24 and 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The celebration will include participation by local vendors such as Goodwin Brothers Farm Stand, kids activities and more. Visitors are invited to park in the lot at the nearby Keene-Brown Funeral Home.

Shred event/shelter drive

Navigant Credit Union will host its sixth annual Shred Event on Saturday, Sept. 24 from noon to 3 p.m. at 925 Victory Highway. There will be a three box limit per household, with free boxes delivered if needed by calling (401) 766-2244 for delivery.

Donations will also be collected for both the North Smithfield Animal Shelter and Friends of the North Smithfield Animal Shelter.

Town meetings

The North Smithfield Town Council will hold a regular meeting on Monday, Sept. 19 starting at 6:45 p.m. at Town Hall at 83 Green St. The agenda is here.

The North Smithfield School Committee will hold a meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 20 starting at 6:30 p.m. in the North Smithfield Middle School cafeteria. The agenda is here.

The Municipal Buildings Review Task Force will hold a meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 21 starting at 5:30 p.m. at the North Smithfield Police Station at 575 Smithfield Road. The agenda is here.
