GLOCESTER – It’s been George’s, Chester’s and of course, most recently, Harmony Lodge.

And soon, the building at 102 Putnam Pike will become Assados, as an experienced restaurant owner brings his kitchen talents to Harmony.

Jorge Diogo, owner of the Roast House, purchased the property this month with hopes to bring a new food offering to the region this November. Diogo appeared before the Glocester Town Council for a victualing license September 1.

Built in 1945 according to town property records, the single story building has features a 5,300-square- foot restaurant and 945-foot deck situated on a 1.3-acre site on Route 44.

It was most recently home to Harmony Lodge, which closed earlier this year. In March, the property was sold to Hammill Corp. LLC for $368,714, and Diogo bought it this month for $550,000.

The Roast House Restaurant & Pub was first opened at Lincoln Mall in 1977 by Carol & Robert Freiberger of North Smithfield. At its height, the business had six locations throughout New England featuring its signature variety of “roast” meats, including beef, turkey and prime rib, along with items including classic appetizers, chicken wings and burgers.

Diogo was there from the start, getting a job at the restaurant in high school and eventually serving as manager at a location in Pawtucket. Now 61, he owns two locations in Pawtucket and Blackstone.

The menu has remained largely the same, with a Portuguese influence to homemade soups, desserts and more.

And while the new moniker in Glocester implies there will be some variation, those wondering what the menu will feature locally do get a clue: Assados is Portuguese for “roast.”
