BURRILLVILLE – School is out for summer vacation and the first day of summer was Tuesday, June 21. During the next few months, summer safety will be the focus of these weekly Sunday Cartoons and articles featured on NRI NOW.

This Sunday, our focus is on backyard open flames, fire pits and barbecue grills, and what you should do if your clothes should happen to catch on fire. Kids need to stay at least three feet away from any open flames or heat sources in the backyard for their safety. Grills not only have flames that could easily cause a child’s clothing to catch on fire, it could also potentially cause severe burns on a child’s skin if they touch that heat source because they are playing or standing nearby.

Open flame fire pits are also extremely hazardous to children, and playing or standing near one puts that child in harm’s way. The best thing adults can do with fire pits is to keep them covered and designate a three feet kids safety zone area for children that can easily be seen and explained to young kids. Communication is key to child safety in and around the home.

If a child’s clothing should happen to catch on fire, the best thing for them to do is follow the Fearless Dino Protector Squad’s fire safety and burn prevention mascot, Dino Puppy’s “911” safety tip, and “stop, drop and roll,” until the flames are extinguished. You could even practice stop, drop and roll with your children so they remember what they should do if their clothes do catch on fire.

Fire safety and burn prevention messages and coloring cartoons are very important when it comes to kids summertime safety.

As an added safety bonus for the summer season, the popular Fearless Dino Protector Squad has produced their very own radio promotions that air hourly and sporadically on multiple radio stations, day and night, that remind kids to be fire safe near flames and grills as well as telling them to stop, drop and roll to prevent burn injuries, thanks in part to DiPonti Communications and caring sponsors.

Have a great and safe summer season!
