BURRILLVILLE – The director of the Rhode Island Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals has announced that a 24-year staff member at Zambarano Hospital, who has spent her career working her way up through the ranks of the facility while caring for patients in Burrillville, will now serve as hospital administrator.

Jennifer McCarthy took on the role as administrator of the Burrillville campus of the Eleanor Slater Hospital system starting on Saturday, May 21. The position oversees day-to-day operations, including oversight of all clinical and non-clinical departments, according to BHDDH Director Richard Charest.

“Oversight includes working in conjunction with the Administrators of each service to ensure that goals are set and accomplished to meet the needs of the patients receiving care in the Beazley building,” noted Charest. “Jennifer will serve as a liaison to the CEO and executive board on behalf of the Zambarano Campus, as well as serving as a member of the leadership.”

McCarthy started work at Zambarano in August of 1998 as a behavior specialist before moving into the role of senior group worker. She has served as clinical social worker, professional services coordinator, ESH/Zambarano group home administrator of rehabilitative services, and risk management administrator.

The announcement comes following news in March that BHDDH, the state agency overseeing the ESH hospital system, has extended the contract of the latest consultant tasked with addressing the hospitals’ ongoing regulatory woes. David Longmore of Pinnacle Healthcare Solutions Inc., who was hired last August for $52,000, had his contract extended for an additional $88,000.

Charest congratulated McCarthy on the appointment.

“She has worked her entire career to ensure that the quality of life provided to the patients of ESH is first and foremost,” Charest said. “Using her energy and positive outlook, Jennifer will look to lead the Zambarano Campus with the goal of continued growth in education, mentoring, communication, and advocacy.”
