BURRILLVILLE – State Treasurer and Democratic candidate Seth Magaziner highlighted his accomplishments and laid out his vision for the Second Congressional District this month for a group gathered in Burrillville, making him the first in a series of candidates for the open seat to visit with the northern Rhode Island Democrats.
Magaziner, who is campaigning for the position held by U.S. Rep. Jim Langevin since 2001, met with members of the Burrillville Democratic Town Committee and the community at the Jesse Smith Memorial Library in Harrisville on Thursday, May 5.
“As a candidate, he reports some of his priorities include preserving and expanding voting rights, addressing rising healthcare costs, advocating for universal preschool and child care, and addressing climate change by transitioning to clean energy programs,” explained committee member and attendee Betsy Alper.
Langevin announced he will not be seeking reelection in 2022, and a crowded field of both Democrats and Republicans are now vying for the congressional seat. Two with local connections who initially announced campaigns, Republican Senate Minority Whip Jessica de la Cruz, who represents District 23, and former state Rep. Ed Pacheco, a Democrat who represented Burrillville from 2005 through 2010, have since dropped out of the race.
Magaziner has served as general treasurer for the state of Rhode Island since 2015.
At the BDTC’s next meeting scheduled for Thursday, June 2, several other Democratic candidates for Congress are expected to speak. Sarah Morgenthau, who recently stepped down from a role as a senior U.S. Department of Commerce official in the Biden administration will attend, along with Omar Bah, the founder of the Refugee Dream Center.
Alper said the committee is still working to confirm if candidate Joy Fox, a former top staffer for both Langevin and former state Gov. Gina Raimondo and CEO of the Clarendon Group, can also attend the meeting.
The gathering will again be held at Jesse Smith Memorial Library, starting at 6 p.m. Members of the community are welcome to attend.
