Liens on six North Smithfield properties sold at tax sale

NORTH SMITHFIELD – A tax sale held at Town Hall on Thursday, March 24 brought in back payments owed on six North Smithfield properties totaling more than $50,000.

Levies on the properties were sold at a public auction advertised in the Woonsocket Call, allowing the town to recoup money due that had not come in on real estate taxes and sewer fees dating as far back as 2018, plus fees and expenses.

Investors who buy the liens collect interest over the course of one year, at which time they have the opportunity to foreclose on the property via a petition in Superior Court if the bills have still not been paid.

Legally, the town was required to publish a list of the properties up for sale 30 days in advance, giving taxpayers a final chance to make good on the bills, or possibly work out a deal. Twelve properties appeared on the original published list but six taxpayers had since come forward to settle the debt.

  1. Is Keith Lovely still at 42 Lorraine ave.? My name is John. I worked for a finish carpenter at this address a couple years ago. I thought Ida died in 2018.

  2. I think it is a doggone shame that a widow whose husband passed away, could not get help to keep her home. Taxes are enormous, and now even higher. Sometimes helping can go a long way.

    • Ida, I completely agree with you. I have made many comments regarding the Town Administrator, Paul Zwolenski and all members of the Town Council approving an additional exemption for veterans, even those that don’t need it. At no point have these people contemplated the needs of elderly women or others having the ability to keep their homes. Shame on them. They are heartless and cruel in their treatment of individuals without means.

  3. What was the outcome of the others that were up for sale that you did not post ! Did they come clean on there taxes or what ?
