Recruit deadline, Prayers for Ukraine: Five things to know in North Smithfield this week

The North Smithfield High School Robotics Team competed at the Western Mass FIRST Robotics Event with 36 schools from all over New England at Western New England University. The team played 17 matches over the course of two days and qualified for the playoff matches, making it to the quarter-finals. The group ended up ranking 13th out of 36. Their next competition will be next weekend in Shrewsbury, Mass., where they will face another 40 high schools. Prayers for Ukraine

The Slatersville Congregational Church at 25 Greene St. will be holding prayer service on Tuesday, March 22 starting at 7 p.m. for the citizens of Ukraine. A former resident will also be speaking about the Ukrainian situation from a personal perspective. The public is invited to attend.

Paint night

Gator’s Pub will host a paint night with artist Angela Rondeau on Tuesday, March 22, with participants to create spring-themed lighted bottles. No experience necessary for the event, which will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. The cost is $35 per person and space is limited.

Recruit deadline

Applications close this week for those interested in applying to become a member of the North Smithfield Police Department. The recruitment deadline is Thursday, March 24 for the July Police Academy. Questions can be directed to tallen@nspolice.org.

Tuesday, March 22 will mark the official end of the town of North Smithfield’s and Lincoln’s 150th birth year. Due to the pandemic, however, celebrations in North Smithfield will continue, including an anniversary parade scheduled for Saturday, May 7.

Organizers have announced a time change for the 2-mile parade to 10 a.m., and are still recruiting marching units, bands and floats. For more information, contact Kate Pasquariello at kpasquariello@nsmithfieldri.org.

Town meetings

The North Smithfield Historic District Commission will hold a meeting on Monday, March 21 starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Memorial Town Building at 1 Main St. The agenda can be found here.
