UPDATE: Weather service issues blizzard warning, up to 30 inches expected

Northern RI – The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for Rhode Island, including the northwest corner of the state, predicting accumulation of 18 to 30 inches from late Friday night through Saturday evening.

The warning, issued around 3:30 pm. on Friday, Jan. 28, notes that blizzard conditions are expected, with wind gusts as high as 60 miles-per-hour. The nor’easter is expected to hit portions of eastern and northeastern Massachusetts and both northern and southern Rhode Island.

The storm is predicted to start around midnight, with a warning in effect for a full 24 hours, through midnight on Saturday, Jan. 29.

“Travel could be extremely difficult to impossible,” notes NWS. “Strong winds could cause tree damage.”

Locals are advised to prepare for potential power outages and have supplies on hand.

The blizzard is expected to cause, “near white out conditions,” at times, with considerable blowing and drifting snow, falling at a rate of two to four inches per hour.

Total accumulations, as of Friday evening, were predicted at 18 to 24 inches, “with localized 30 inches possible.”
