NORTH SMITHFIELD – A car caught fire in an off-road crash on Route 146 Wednesday, Dec. 8, leaving the driver with minor injury.

The single-car accident occurred just before 8 p.m. when a vehicle crashed into the woods on the southbound side of the highway, just south of the Farnum Pike/Greenville Road exit.

“The car went off the road and then caught fire,” explained North Smithfield Fire & Rescue Chief David Chartier.

According to Chartier, the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames, but the occupant had self-extricated by the time fire personnel arrived. The Woonsocket Fire Department was called to the scene to assist.

Chartier said that the victim showed minor injury, but refused transport to the hospital.

The accident briefly closed down the right lane of the road Wednesday evening while the scene was cleared.
