From the Editor’s Desk: On gratitude

A Thanksgiving scene on Pond House Road, North Smithfield

It’s been three and a half years since the launch of Northern Rhode Island News On the Web, and on this Thanksgiving Day, it’s time to thank all in the community who have helped to contribute to our success, from our readers and contributors, to our advertisers, and the town officials who have always been there to help us along the way.

While there’s nothing new or novel about the goal of keeping residents informed about their communities, there were few business models for what we set out to do in 2018: build, from scratch, an online-only hyper-local product that filled a gap in local news coverage, offering all that a daily newspaper could provide in a new format.

We have definitely had challenges. While we’re proud to say that we’ve yet to miss a day of publishing community news since our launch that April, there was a lot of learning involved. Technology issues, questions about ethics in journalism and concerns about the stories we may have missed, and the readers we failed to reach, have led to more than a few sleepless nights. And we shared in the uncertainty and struggles of small business owners through a pandemic that has changed our economy, and ultimately, our world.

But with another holiday season and a new year approaching, NRI NOW is still here, and going strong.

We’re strong because of you, our readers, and thanks to every story you’ve allowed us to tell. We’re strong thanks to every person at Town Hall that is willing to pick up a phone and share information or offer us some insight, from town administrators and managers, to department heads. We’re strong thanks to all who have donated, advertised or even just clicked that “like,” or “share,” button on our articles.

We would love to list the individuals that deserve special acknowledgement, but there are far too many. And so, instead, we’ll just say, “Thank you northern Rhode Island.”

May your holiday season be filled with family, friends and all of the community spirit that makes our small towns a wonderful place to live all year round. It’s a been a privilege to be part of your journey, and we hope to continue serving your community for many years to come.

Happy Thanksgiving northern Rhode Island!
