River’s North, Swim session, Street hockey: Five things to know in Burrillville this week

River’s North & BBQ

It is the last week to purchase tickets for the fundraiser to Save Sweets Hill, a concert and BBQ scheduled for Sunday, July 25. Band RIver’s North will play the event, to be held at the Townsmen Club in Mapleville. It is the latest in a series of events aimed at saving the 150-acre East Avenue property from development.

Tickets for the event cost $20, with proceeds to go toward purchase of the property, and are available by calling (401) 447-1560 or sending an email to info@burrillvillelandtrust.org.

Third swim session

The Burrillville Lions Club has announced the dates for a third swim session this summer, to be held August 2-6, with lessons taught by a certified swim instructor. The cost for the one week session at Spring Lake Beach is $25 per child, and families must also purchase a Family Beach Pass for $30. Classes for students age 3-5 will be held from 10:30-11:30 a.m. and 6-12 from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Space is limited and the deadline to register is July 31. Register at the beach at 50 Old Hillside Drive.

Street hockey

The Burrillville Junior Hockey League has announced a new Summer Street Hockey session to be played at the outdoor rink in Oakland on Tuesday and Thursday evening through August. Ages 6 and up are welcome to play and you do not have to be a member of the BJHL to play.

Groups will play from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., and 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the rink at 1155 Victory Highway starting Tuesday, July 20. Players only need to bring a water bottle and a stick.

The cost to play is $60 and includes a BJHL Street Hockey t-shirt. To register, visit the BJHL website here

All About Amy

The Riverwalk Summer Concert Series continues on Saturday, July 24 with a free concert with All About Amy, formerly The DeLoreans. Concerts take place at the Stillwater Mill Pavilion by Jesse Smith Memorial Library, or are moved to Levy Ice Rick in inclement weather. Bring blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy the show from 6 to 8 p.m.

Town meetings

The Burrillville Conservation Commission will hold a meeting on Tuesday, July 20 starting at 7 p.m.at 103 Harrisville Main St. Members of the public can listen or participate via Zoom with the agenda and instructions found here.

The Oakland Mapleville Fire District and the Nasonville Fire District will hold a joint meeting on Tuesday, July 20 at 46 Oakland School St. at 7 p.m. to discuss merging the two districts. The agenda can be found here.

The Burrillville Town Council will hold a regular meeting on Wednesday, July 21 starting at 7 p.m. Members of the public can attend via Zoom with the agenda and link found here.
